Yamashita Tomohisa to perform on this week’s M! Countdown

Japanese idol star Yamashita Tomohisa will be appearing on next week’s episode of Mnet’s M! Countdown!

Currently the leader of boy band NEWS, the idol is scheduled to release his first official solo album, “SUPERGOOD, SUPERBAD“, on March 2nd, followed by a two day Korean concert on April 16th and 17th at the KBS 88 Gymnasium. In promotion of his solo album, he’ll be making an appearance on the February 24th episode of M! Countdown.

Mnet Media, who currently handles his Korean licensing, as well as promotions, commented, “Many of the Japanese dramas he starred in have achieved considerable popularity in Korea.  We’ve already received countless questions on his Korean activities for the past two months.”

Yamashita Tomohisa previously made a visit in 2008 and was greeted by hundreds of fans that froze Gimpo Airport, demonstrating his popularity outside of Japan.

Japanese record labels compete to nab IU

Singer IU is the latest K-pop star to receive competing love calls from Japanese record labels, who believe the teen starlet would be able to replicate the smashing success of fellow idol singers KARA and SNSD. In fact, Japanese entertainment companies have recently been scrambling to scoop up the hottest Korean stars – just look at the upcoming Japanese debuts of groups like B2ST, After School, SECRET, Teen Top, INFINITE, SHINee, MBLAQ, and T-ara.

It’s no surprise that she’s attracted the attention of Japanese labels, as she’s been nothing but popular since her “Good Day” comeback (the song, in retrospect, couldn’t have been named any better).  But she’s become even more of a hot commodity because of her role in KBS’s hit drama, “Dream High“, which will be airing in Japan soon and is expected to garner high ratings.

Her management company said that they were “willing to consider a Japanese debut, but we’re in no hurry as we’d like to solidify our domestic position first.”

Perhaps after “Dream High” ends and she wraps up promotions for her repackaged album, “Real+“, IU will be in a better position to scope out a possible debut in the rapidly filling Japanese market.

Arashi send total music DVD sales to 4 million for the first time ever

Arashi have sold almost twice as many music DVDs as any other music artist in Japan over their career, reports Oricon.

Figures released by Oricon’s weekly charts have revealed Arashi’s latest music DVD “ARASHI 10-11 TOUR “Scene” ~君と僕の見ている風景 (Kimi to Boku no Miteiru Fukei)~ STADIUM” had sold 59,000 copies in its second week of sales. Adding this number to the DVD’s first week sales of 618,000 and their previous 10 DVD sales, the total had surpassed four million copies. It is the first time an artist’s music DVD sales have hit four million over their career in Japan.

Arashi had taken over the number one spot for overall music DVD sales in 2010 after their last DVD “ARASHI Anniversary Tour 5 X 10″ passed the record set by girl band Morning Musume.

The top three artist records are now:
1. Arashi – 4.01 million
2. Morning Musume – 2.29 million
3. Ayumi Hamasaki – 2.23 million
